With their messy divorce proceedings coming to a head, Crowley was anxious to escape England. Magically, he was seeking a breakthrough, an act of supreme spiritual achievement to cement the AA's authority in the occult world and his own as the head of the order. (00:06:03)

And prophetically, only months earlier, Crowley was searching for skiing equipment in his attic, and in an envelope tucked behind a pair of skis, he rediscovered his manuscript of the Book of the Law, a strange text that prophesied his apocalyptic role in ushering in the Aeon of Horus. So to Alistair Crowley, ascending the 30 Enochian Aethers in the Algerian Desert wasn't a mere magical experiment. It was a high-stakes gamble to prove his divine mission to the world and to himself. (00:06:36)

And then there was a dreamy and mystical 26-year-old poet from Cambridge, Victor Newberg, who'd come to learn that every magical operation has its cause. Newberg and Crowley's relationship was both deeply complex and troubling. The young poet had come from a comfortable middle-class Jewish family, which, while kind and generous, had little in common with a son who rejected their conventional religion of Judaism. Newberg had experienced mystical states since he was a child, and this led him far away from his family's religion and toward rebellion. (00:07:09)

As a young man wrote in his journals, quote, When he first met Alistair Crowley, Crowley appeared to him as an affluent, charming, and erudite fellow poet who understood spiritual realities. For a young mystic who felt deeply misunderstood, he wasn't just a powerful figure. He was validation of Newberg's entire inner world. Newberg felt that he'd found a master who could guide his innate chaotic mystical experiences. In turn, Crowley recognized in Newberg an altogether extraordinary capacity for magic, though he thought that the young poet was too lazy, undisciplined, and self-conscious to properly wield it. (00:08:23)

In the AA, Newberg became Crowley's cello, a disciple bound by a sacred vow of obedience. He'd soon join Crowley on this journey to Algeria. However, before the cello could accompany his master on any great work, the cello first had to be tested. Crowley's test was brutal. In June 1909, Newberg arrived at Crowley's estate, Beluscan House, on the shores of Loch Ness, expecting advanced training. Instead, Crowley ordered him into a so-called magical retirement, ten days of literally torturous isolation in a specially prepared chamber. (00:08:57)

Stripped naked and with little food, Newberg was made to sleep cold and shivering on a bed of gorse, a shrub with strong sharp thorns. On one occasion, Crowley came in to whip him with a bundle of stinging nettles until he bled. Newberg noted in his diary, arguably with understatement, that Crowley, quote, is apparently a homosexual sadist who performed the ceremony with obvious satisfaction. It was quite painful, though it aroused no emotion in me save that of laughter. Because I laughed, he called me a masochist. Had I complained, he would have called me a coward. (00:09:35)

Had I manifested no emotion, he would have charged me with being callous. End quote. Crowley's verbal abuse was just as terrible and relentless, mocking Newberg's dainty appearance, kind personality and Jewish background, with enough personal insults and racial slurs to make Newberg genuinely reconsider his vows. Quote, my worthy guru is unnecessarily rude and brutal, apparently to amuse himself and pass the time away. It is ungenerous to abuse one's position as guru. Were it not for my vow, I would not stay longer under my guru's roof. (00:10:15)

I will not have my family and race perpetually insulted. His personalities are becoming monstrous. If I am again insulted, I shall depart immediately. End quote. Despite these feelings, the young man had a change of heart the next morning and retreated back under Crowley's cold heel. You may be wondering why Newberg allowed himself to be subjected to this. From his perspective, he had devoted himself to Aleister Crowley because he believed that Crowley was a genuine article. (00:10:46)

He was seeking a magical breakthrough and endured because he trusted the process would yield results and was necessary to his initiation. In our investigation, it is vital to keep both the magical and practical contexts in mind. In occult societies, initiation often involves ordeals meant to push the initiate past their limits, psychic, psychological, and physical, to break the person and thus force a metaphysical breakthrough. Make no mistake though, abuse framed as initiation still carries the effects of abuse and a sacred vow of obedience can coexist with harm and victimhood. (00:11:25)

We should also consider that Crowley's magical methods were and still are considered by many occultists to be effective and largely due to their cause. But whether efficacy absolves ethics is a question worth keeping in mind. According to Victor Newberg's diary, over time he began to experience magical success. In the depths of suffering and isolation, he started experiencing altered states of consciousness, moments of ecstatic union with what he called the cosmic mind, countered by episodes of horrific crushing despair. (00:12:05)

The two extremes forced Newberg into a center and by the end he emerged with a sense of peace and harmony and what Aleister Crowley deemed a true insight into initiated consciousness. For passing this 10-day trial, Newberg was advanced in the AA to the magical grade of neophyte. This was the price of discipleship in Crowley's world. An intense and complex relationship was forged between them of ruthless master and fiercely devoted disciple. It also foreshadowed the dual nature of their journey and ordeals to come. (00:12:35)

Several months after Newberg's magical retirement, on November 17, 1909, the two men reunited in North Africa, stepping off the boat into the port city of Algiers. To colonial officials, Crowley was unmistakably an English gentleman abroad. Tall, self-assured, impeccably mannered, and only faintly amused at the bureaucratic displays of imperialism. According to contemporary records, Crowley returned their reception with polite disdain. When asked what the purpose of their trip was, he told them it was for pleasure. Newberg stood silently and inconspicuously beside him. (00:13:20)

The French authorities eyed the two Englishmen for a good minute, then warned that traveling into the Sahara Desert, unaccompanied by soldiers, was seriously dangerous. Bedouin raids, harsh terrain, and the sheer remoteness were risks that no sane visitor took lightly. However, their warnings only offended Crowley further as a seasoned mountaineer and world traveler who'd climbed the peaks of the Himalayas and wandered some of the deadliest landscapes from Egypt to Mexico. In his mind, there was nothing that he couldn't handle in the Sahara Desert. As for Newberg, Crowley believed the extreme experience would rough him into shape. (00:14:02)

So, Crowley ignored their warnings and moved on to more practical business, purchasing food and essentials to outfit their expedition. One thing did concern him, however. Not danger, but appearances. According to Crowley, the physically slight Victor Newberg had an awkward gait and, in his words, a hang-dog expression. Newberg's appearance threatened to spoil the image Aleister Crowley wanted to project among the Arabs. The solution was on-brand for Crowley. Theatrical, humiliating, and symbolic. (00:14:41)

He shaved Newberg's head, leaving only two tufts of hair at his temples, and twisted them into little horns. Crowley wrote that his chela had been transformed into, quote, a demon that I had tamed and trained to serve me as a familiar spirit. This greatly enhanced my eminence with the locals, end quote. With Newberg deliberately and publicly degraded, the two boarded a tram to Arba at the edge of the French colonial territory, and there, after a light lunch, began their long march south on foot, moving toward a goal unknown to either of them at the time. (00:15:20)

As Crowley recounted in his memoirs, quote, I had no special magical object in going to Algiers. We merely wanted to rough it a bit in a new and interesting corner of the planet of which we were parasites. With no particular objective beyond filling our lungs with pure air and renewing the austere rapture of sleeping on the ground and watching the stars, end quote. For three days, their world was that of an endless stony landscape and grueling physical labor, including a 32-mile uphill march to the town of Tablot. It was a journey of the body, but not yet of the soul. (00:16:01)

But everything changed on November 21st, when they reached a small town of Oumal. Crowley had been to Africa before, but this was Newburgh's first time. In Oumal, it really struck the poet that he was in a completely foreign land. His biography, The Magical Dilemma of Victor Newburgh, recounts how, quote, even the ordinary sights of the day, Arabs going about in their own dress with donkeys and camels, were emotional for him, end quote. But while Newburgh was in awe, his master was in the midst of a supernatural shift. (00:16:36)

In his book Confessions, Crowley struggled to explain what happened there, quote, I cannot imagine why or how the idea came to me. Perhaps I happened to have in my rucksack one of my earliest magical notebooks, where I had copied with infinite patience the 19 calls or keys obtained by Sir Edward Kelly from certain angels and written from his dictation by Queen Elizabeth's astrologer, Dr. John Dee, one of the very few genuine and interesting works on magic of any period. (00:17:11)

Much of their work still defies explanation, end quote. To understand what sees Crowley in that dusty town, we need to crack open this very same magical notebook. Inside it was a forbidden map of reality, one so dangerous that for over 300 years, no one had dared to fully explore it. It was a relic from the 16th century, born from the bizarre partnership of the brilliant but eccentric John Dee and his highly suspicious, likely ex-criminal magical partner, Edward Kelly. To communicate with what they believed to be heavenly angels, John Dee and Edward Kelly performed what are known as scrying sessions. Scrying is a magical practice that involves focusing one's gaze on a reflective surface, such as a mirror or crystal ball, to gain supernatural insights, experience visions, and communicate with the spiritual realm. The person who scries is a scryer, or seer, and this was Edward Kelly. And the one who records the scryer's experience is the scribe, the role of John Dee, who is also in charge of the project. (00:18:40)

Dee pushed Kelly to perform these strange scrying sessions day in and day out for seven fevered years. While their work virtually destroyed both of their lives, and certainly their relationship, the end result was a complete system of magic known as Enochian magic. The alleged angels delivered to them 19 Enochian keys, powerful incantations capable of unlocking the gates of reality. The first 18 keys supposedly grant access to the four elemental watchtowers of classical magic, earth, air, water, and fire. (00:19:20)

However, the 19th key was special, as it contained interchangeable words with 30 possible outcomes. It essentially functioned as a master password to unlock any one of 30 concentric heavens, hidden spiritual dimensions the angels referred to as aethers. Imagine the cosmos peeled like an onion, 30 translucent shells nested into one another, each smaller and stranger than the last, telescoping inward toward a white hot core. The aethers are numbered from 30, the aether-tex, at the very edge of the universe, the rim of creation, all the way inward to one, the aether-lil, at the blazing incandescent center. (00:20:01)

This is the Enochian map of the heavens. While John Dee and Edward Kelly received what appeared to be the complete magical system, they never actually used it to journey into any of the aethers. Unfortunately, their partnership collapsed after an incident of wife-swapping gone wrong, and they immediately severed ties, leaving their forbidden map of the heavens uncharted. In the centuries to follow, this failure was considered one of the most significant missed opportunities in esoteric history. (00:20:34)

Thankfully, despite John Dee's ill feelings toward the project, he was a meticulous archivist. So, for some 300 years, his notebooks were passed down and studied by ceremonial magicians such as the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, of which Aleister Crowley had been excommunicated from as a member. The Golden Dawn were arguably the first occultists who attempted to put the system to practical use, to ascend all 30 aethers. If that sounds easy or safe, I regret to inform there's no such thing in Enochian magic. (00:21:09)

It didn't take long until the Golden Dawn's highest ranking members recognized a strict rule that one must ascend the aethers in their exact order, from the 30th aether, Tex, inward until reaching the first and final aether, Lil. This is because each aether distills or filters the one after it. If you miss a pass, skipping a step, you risk collapsing the cosmic ladder. The vision shatters like safety glass and the unfiltered rushes in. Those lucky enough might suffer weeks of vertigo, confusion, or disassociation, but there have been more serious cases of what occultists call magical madness, a life-debilitating condition brought on by improperly performed ritual magic, where the magician's mind appears to have been drained replaced by nothing but chaos and illusion. (00:22:03)

However, this was far from the only danger of the aethers. The Golden Dawn's leaders discovered that between the 10th aether, Zax, and the 9th aether, Zip, was a seemingly impenetrable barrier, an existential event horizon they referred to as the Abyss. To cross the Abyss, one had to conquer his guardian, Kuranzan. Also known as the Demon of Dispersion, Kuranzan isn't a traditional devil of fire or brimstone, but rather an ever-babbling and shapeshifting embodiment of pure chaotic selfhood, a distorted mockery of consciousness. (00:22:41)

According to Aleister Crowley's text, The Vision and the Voice, Kuranzan is dispersion and cannot fix his mind upon any one thing for any length of time. Kuranzan hath no form, because he is the maker of all form, and so he rapidly changeth from one to the other, and because he is himself, therefore he is no self, for there is no center, nay, nothing but dispersion. End quote. The Golden Dawn's leaders warned that successfully facing Kuranzan and crossing the Abyss required the total annihilation of the self, or ego, and failure would result in the ultimate spiritual catastrophe, described as the fate of an adept who chooses to preserve their selfhood at all cost. (00:23:31)

Fearing total annihilation, they build defenses around themselves to survive, trapping themselves in the Abyss and cutting themselves off from the Divine forever. The Golden Dawn established that only an adept deemed worthy of the magical grade Magister Templi, or Master of the Temple, should dare to risk the Abyss. By crossing it, they'd be conferred this most supreme rank. However, no member of the Golden Dawn's original Victorian order ever claimed to have obtained the grade of Master of the Temple, and with that, it's believed that none ever completed a full ascent through the 30 Enochian Aethers. Almost exactly nine years prior to the events in Algeria, a 25-year-old Aleister Crowley was scaling the Great Volcanoes of Mexico, and it was there that he first attempted to explore the Enochian Heavens, and failed. (00:24:27)

On November 14th, 1900, Crowley invoked the 30th and outermost Aether, Tex, and three days later, he proceeded to the 29th, Re, as he recorded in The Vision and Voice, quote, In Aether 30, I am in a vast crystal cube. This cube is surrounded by a sphere. About me are four archangels in black robes. In Aether 29, the sky appears covered with stars of gold. An immense eagle angel is before me. His wings seem to hide all of heaven. End quote. These visions were as incomprehensible as they were terrifyingly powerful and overwhelming. (00:25:04)

Even as a highly skilled magician, after these two initial Aethers, Crowley had to back down. Quote, I could no more force myself to go on to the 28th Aether than I could have thrown myself from a cliff. End quote. He accepted the spiritual rebuff and laid this terrifying work aside for however long it would take him to become ready for it. Now, nine years later, in the Algerian town of Oumal, that day had come. (00:25:36)

Crowley's journey through the magical grades, his founding of the AA, and his rediscovery of the Book of the Law were all validation that he was ready, and perhaps worthy, to confirm and complete the Enochian map and become a master of the temple. Quote, I had not thought of continuing this work for nearly nine years. But at Oumal, a hand suddenly smote its lightning into my heart, and I knew that now, that very day, I must take up my work with the Aethers from the point where I had laid it down. End quote. (00:26:10)

With this divine instruction received, Crowley and Newberg's true mission in Algeria was revealed. Their trip for pleasure, if you could call it that, was over. Alistair Crowley came prepared. He had his old notebooks from Mexico and his scrying stone, a two-inch engraved golden topaz in a vermillion wooden cross. He also had a dedicated scribe, Victor Newberg, who, at the same time, was to continue his duties as the expedition's load-bearing quartermaster. This was despite Crowley recognizing Newberg as a gifted clairvoyant. In this operation, Crowley would be his only seer and scryer. (00:26:55)

He kept a handwritten journal at this time, and it's interesting to see how his entries became increasingly sparse, serious, fragmented, and intense over the course of their month-long mission. However, it's clear how relaxed Crowley felt about it at the beginning. November 23rd, a nice slack day at Umo, chiefly billiards and such things as playing footer with old tin can, wrestling, and boxing. Our host offered me the aperitif, and we chatted a while. Umo is really a rather jolly place. (00:27:32)

The bottle turned out to be hopelessly poxed, and we tossed it. In the evening, I did the 28th aether, end quote. The process of invoking the aethers was simple enough. First, he and Newberg would choose a secluded location where they were unlikely to be disturbed. Second, Crowley would kick things off with a powerful preparatory chant known as the Bornless Invocation, adopted from a 4th century Greco-Egyptian text on exorcism. Originally, it was used to cast out spirits, but with some heavy editing, Crowley instead used it to invoke or summon spirits, as well as declare to the spirits that they weren't dealing with mere mortal, but an adept with divine authority. (00:28:18)

Third, Crowley would recite the 19th Enochian key with the correct incantation to unlock their target aether. Fourth, once he felt the invoked forces were present, Crowley would take out his large golden topaz. Gazing into it, he would begin to scry into spirit vision, as he described it. Essentially, he would enter a trance state where his senses could perceive otherworldly phenomena. And fifth, Crowley would describe everything he saw and repeat everything he heard aloud as the vision unfolded. Sitting beside him, Newberg furiously scribbled down every word, filling sheet after sheet of paper, trying his best to keep up. (00:28:56)

The first vision Crowley invoked in Algeria was of a terrifying angel with a black face, white eyes, and a long flail of scarlet lightning. To Crowley, this vision symbolized the dawn of the Aeon of Horus, the new age which Crowley believed he was the prophet. They set off again the next morning, leaving Umol. At this time, Crowley and Newberg continued trekking hard, averaging around 20 miles a day. The young poet's words painted the romanticism of their quest. Quote, The sun is glowing over the eternal sand, and the endless road grows steeper. (00:29:36)

We are going into a nameless land, and we shall know what lies beyond and see the shadow of the olden mystery. No way may lead us back. Our track is hidden in dust and sand and grass. For lo, we journey on a road forbidden, where no man sees us pass. End quote. That night, in the bitter cold of the remote desert, they invoked the 27th Aether, Za, and the following day, after arriving in Sidi Aissa, they invoked the 26th, Des. These are similar to the previous Aethers in one way. (00:30:13)

All were broadly prophetic of this new age and the overthrow of the old gods. Voices spoke to him. It is the dawn of the eon. This trend took a drastic shift, however, when the visions became much more personal. Alistair Crowley identified himself not only as the prophet of the new era, but specifically as the Great Beast 666. He began to see representations of himself as the beast in the visions. Upon scrying the 25th Aether, Viti, he witnessed the Great Beast in form of a lion, swallowing up an angel on a white horse and another on a black bull, both symbolizing the old gods. (00:30:58)

The lion then roared a prophecy, quote, Like the ash of dried leaves, the worlds are blown before me. On my head is the crown, and my soul is the soul of the crowned child. Who shall ride upon me but the woman of abominations, Babylon? Who is the beast? End quote. Initially, Crowley intended the work to be an emotionally detached and impersonal exploration of the Aethers. However, between the 25th to the 20th Aethers, the visions stopped merely announcing the new age. (00:31:33)

They assigned his place in it, not as witness, but as the beast in the center of the cosmic upheaval. The escalating intimacy of personal destiny took a severe psychological toll on Crowley. He sensed a growing awe and dread, quote, I felt that a hand was holding my heart. I began to feel, well, not exactly frightened. It was the subtle trembling of a maiden before the bridegroom. End quote. It was terrifying, and at the same time, exciting and strangely erotic. (00:32:07)

To fortify himself against this overwhelming spiritual pressure, Aleister Crowley adopted a new intensely devotional practice. As he and Newberg trekked the desert, Crowley began reciting a verse from the Quran, specifically Surah 112, quote, a thousand and one times a day during the march, prostrating myself after each repetition. End quote. This was one of the countless instances where Newberg witnessed his master causing suffering and exhaustion onto himself as if he loved it. But whether or not he did wasn't the point. (00:32:45)

The young poet had studied Crowley's writings from the Golden Dawn, where his magical motto was Perderabo, which in Latin means I shall endure. For Crowley, the severe physical exhaustion of continuous bowing and the mental strain of this rhythmic mantra served to beat his mind and body into submission, and it appeared to work well for a time. However, the nature of the visions was about to evolve once again, getting even more up close and personal. They began to ritually initiate Crowley toward a terrible and necessary trial soon to come. (00:33:19)

Crowley popped the veil of the 19th Aether, POP, near midnight on November 30th. What emerged was no longer the chaotic, hallucinatory landscape he'd grown accustomed to. Instead, a figure of an angel materialized with deliberate purpose. Crowley identified this being as Hegemony, the ritual officer of the metaphysical realm, whose purpose in ceremonial magic was to guide the candidate through initiation. This vision laid the structural framework for what would be a formal ceremonial ascent. Two Aethers deeper, in the vortex of the 17th, TAN, all symbolic pretense was abandoned and the vision spoke in the cold language of metaphysical law. (00:34:05)

They taught Crowley that any disturbance or deviation from a state of perfect unity constituted iniquity, a form of cosmic crime against the divine. In his vision, written in a strange alphabet on shining luminous objects, were condemnations that existence itself was unlawful. Quote, motion is iniquity, breath is iniquity, torsion is iniquity. End quote. An indescribably massive angel then wrapped itself around the earth and a voice boomed down with mention of Kuranzin, the guardian of the abyss. (00:34:43)

This triggered a realization that would shake Crowley to his core. According to his writings, quote, I understood that every disturbance which makes manifestation possible implies deviation from perfection. My individuality, which distinguishes me from all other beings, involves the idea of injustice. Therefore, to penetrate beyond the abyss, between the 10th and 9th aethers, where iniquity cannot exist, my personal selfhood must be annihilated. End quote. Not transformation, not transcendence, but the systematic and permanent destruction of the ego. (00:35:24)

On the morning of December 3rd, in a desert cave, Aleister Crowley invoked Oxo, the 15th aether, which culminated the sequence of initiation in a direct interactive trial. He found himself in a vast amphitheater, carved out of rose-colored marble, its bottom filled with pure liquid mercury. Sitting across the amphitheater's seven tiers were robed magicians. From each tier, except for the innermost, the highest ranking adept came forth to test him, one by one. (00:35:58)

As Crowley dictated to Newberg, quote, The first drove a dagger into my heart and tasted the blood. The second adept tests the muscles of my right arm and shoulder. The third adept examines the skin and tastes the sweat of my left arm. The fourth adept examines my neck and seems to approve, though he says nothing. And he hath opened the right half of my brain, and he makes some examination, and admitted the right to the grade of Magister Templi. The fifth adept examines the left half of my brain, and then holds up his hand in protest, and says, In the thick darkness the seed awaiteth spring. End quote. (00:36:40)

The five adepts had judged Crowley worthy of the temple, but utterly unprepared for the rank of magus that lay beyond it. However, the seed, the potential of magus, was within him. The aethers had systematically transformed Aleister Crowley from a mere explorer into a fully consecrated candidate. They'd laid out the cosmic laws, warned him of the stakes and the sacrifice, and judged his readiness and worth. Crowley was standing at the very precipice of the abyss. For nearly two weeks, this daily rhythm of grueling desert marches and exponentially mind-shattering spiritual invocations had been Crowley and Newberg's entire world. (00:37:27)

Finally, they arrived at the hilltop town of Busada, an isolated haven of orchards, gardens, and white-walled houses that felt like the last link with civilization. The young poet was in awe of the colors and the smell of flowers, but his master gazed into the distance. Past the town loomed a mountain, Mount Dala'adin. From his visions of the last several aethers, Crowley understood that Mount Dala'adin was where the fourteenth aether, V'tah, had to be invoked, a critical threshold before the abyss itself. (00:38:01)

On December 3rd, he and Newberg began their climb, and it was a treacherous ascent. There, at the top of the mountain, Crowley made the call. Within moments, he was confronted by a thick black veil, a barrier of pure spiritual darkness that, as much as he tried, he couldn't penetrate. As he struggled with the suffocating dark, a great earthquake seemed to rend the veil into a thousand flying pieces. And there, an all-glorious angel stood before him, surrounded by darkness and the crying of beasts. The angel gave a stern command. (00:38:37)

Depart. Evoke me only in the darkness. The mystery is great and terrible. It shall not be spoken in sight of the sun. Crowley withdrew from the vision and put their operation of the fourteenth aether on pause. Planning to return at night, he and Newberg began packing up to descend Mount Dala'adin and return to Busada in time for dinner. However, the beast was suddenly struck by a supernatural force commanding him to perform a magical ceremony right there on the summit. (00:39:13)

While it was still daylight, and this command was absolute, Crowley and Newberg, both serious about their magical vows, obeyed it with urgency. The details in Aleister Crowley's writings and records regarding this ritual, which would become known as the Sacrifice to Pan, are few and cryptic. For many decades, the true nature of the Mount Dala'adin ceremony was known only to the two men and perhaps a few inner initiates. (00:39:45)

In Crowley's own handwritten Algerian journal, he wrote, quote, of the ceremony that I accomplished upon the summit, it is not lawful to write, but I did finally and definitely, with all humility, take that which has so long lain ready to my hand, end quote. In his autobiographical Confessions, which wasn't published until 1969, 21 years after his death, he was still secretive about the rite, using very cryptic terms and even apologizing for speaking so obliquely about it. Quote, we took loose rocks and built a great circle. (00:40:21)

We erected an altar and there I sacrificed myself. The fire of the all-seeing sun smote down, consuming utterly every particle of my personality. I am obliged to write an hieroglyph of this matter because it concerns things of which it is unlawful to speak openly under penalty of the most dreadful punishment. But I may say that I hitherto clung to certain conceptions of conduct which were impertinent to initiation. I could not cross the abyss till I had torn them out of my heart. The master of the temple must rid himself of every trace of impurity, for above the abyss all opposites are included in a single idea. I knew that my point of view was mere personal prejudice. (00:41:08)

I obeyed and made the act which I most feared and abhorred as detestable, the most bestial blasphemy. End quote. With that, the public was left to connect the dots long after Crowley had passed away, and the first explicit revelations came around this time, arguably first by Victor Newberg's biographer, Jean Overton Fuller, who knew Newberg personally. While still tactful in her language, Fuller revealed that something drastic had occurred involving sex and the god Pan, and once the cat was out of the bag, followers of Crowley and his magical orders also acknowledged these same details. (00:41:47)

What happened on the summit of Mount Dala'adin on December 3rd, 1909 was as follows. As the sun was near its zenith, Victor Newberg invoked the lustful goat god Pan to possess his body in a frenzy. With his faun-like appearance and his hair still tufted into horns, Newberg embodied every aspect of Pan. He described it as losing his senses and all divine pretense to pure ecstasy. Following this, Aleister Crowley offered himself as a sacrifice to Pan. In literal terms, this meant that Newberg, the disciple, dominated his master Crowley through an act of sodomy. (00:42:32)

Crowley was the receiving partner, and this position was chosen for its psychic shock value, a role reversal, ritualized humiliation, and surrender of both status and control to break down the last defenses of his ego. The result of the sacrifice was to purify and empty Crowley of all ego, the requirement for crossing the abyss. But if Aleister Crowley was emptied of all ego, why did he go out of his way to hide the details of the ritual? (00:43:06)

To keep silence is one of the four cardinal virtues of the magical adept, the other three being to know, to will, and to dare. To exercise silence was to keep that which is sacred separate from the profane, the ordinary, the mundane, and the everyday, in order to maintain the integrity and power of the sacred. To keep silence was sworn by both Crowley and Newberg in their magical oaths. However, Crowley's use of the word unlawful carried not only a magical meaning, but also a literal one too. (00:43:39)

Homosexuality was a criminal offense for British citizens, punishable by imprisonment with extreme Victorian-era conditions that included hard labor, hard fare, and a hard bed. Moreover, European society treated male homosexuality as deeply scandalous and immoral. This could have easily led to an organized moral crusade against Crowley, similar to the witch hunts against the playwright Oscar Wilde, or the press campaigns against the occultist Annie Besant over her advocacy of birth control. There were also larger things at stake, such as Crowley's prophetic mission, as well as the legal protection and internal stability of his occult organization, the AA. And this is considering the homosexual aspect of it alone, not even factoring in the fact that it was an act of sex magic. (00:44:35)

To this day, the use of sexual energy as a magical engine remains among the most divisive forms of magic in the occult world. As far as records go, this was the first ritual act of sex magic that Crowley ever performed, though we can assume he had some notion of just how controversial it would be. So from a purely strategic perspective, Crowley's decision to obscure the details of the Pan Ceremony makes sense. As for Newberg, he was actually inspired by the image of Pan after the ritual, writing a poem titled, The Triumph of Pan, quote, The current of my soul hath broken the bounds of sensual life, and I am grown a god, a sinewy token, of Pan's most ardent strife. (00:45:23)

We, my God, have been sublimely wise, obscene in passion, the revel and the rapture and the feast, the peon and the crowning of the beast. From out the loins of God, rise from the barren sod, raise high the peon of the God and man. Yo triumph, hail to the newborn Pan, end quote. According to Newberg's biographer, Gene Overton Fuller, this was his greatest emotional height during the journey. He was ecstatic and in the pride of his powers. (00:45:54)

Though he'd been rocked by the waves of the storm, he was yet unbroken and afloat with motivation. After the ritual ended, Crowley was in a dazed, disassociated state. He barely remembered climbing down with Newberg and returning to Boo Sada. He described the feeling like, there was an animal in the wilderness, but it was not I. He eventually recovered his wits and waited for the night. At 9.50 p.m. Crowley re-invoked the 14th Aether and the same angel in suffocating oppressive darkness reappeared. (00:46:26)

Quote, The angel whispered the mysteries of the masters of the temple. My eyes beheld the masters. Each one was exactly like the other. The angel told me that now my name was Nemo, Latin for no man, seated among the other silent shapes in the city of the pyramids under the night of Pan. End quote. Having sacrificed his ego, Crowley was now Nemo, a man without a name. And the visions that followed began to directly address the nature of his final great test. (00:47:01)

That of the demon of the abyss, Karanzin. The stakes were laid bare on the night of December 4th, when he invoked the 12th Aether, Lo. He was shown a stark warning of the ultimate spiritual catastrophe, the fate of adepts who failed to cross the abyss, who clung to their identities at the final moment. The angel described how they, quote, shut up their blood in their heart. In their lonely fortresses, they bind themselves together with an oath and with a great curse. (00:47:34)

Thus they make war upon the Holy One. End quote. The message was clear that failure meant becoming a cancerous, isolated ego, a fortress of selfhood doomed to magical madness and eternal torment. The very next evening, December 5th, he and Newberg arrived at the frontier itself, the 11th Aether, Ik. The vision was of a mighty iron fortress, a bastion guarded by legions of tense, vigilant angels. This was the final guard post. Here an angel of the guard confirmed, quote, he that understandeth must go forth unto the outermost abyss, and there he must speak with him that is set above the fourfold terror, with Karanzin, the mighty devil that inhabiteth the outermost abyss. End quote. (00:48:27)

Knowing he had to face this entity, Crowley turned to the divine for strength, asking the angel if there wasn't a warden appointed to help him through the trial, referring to his own holy guardian angel, the divine being he had dedicated his life to knowing. The angel's reply was the single most devastating moment of his entire journey. It was a cry of ultimate and absolute abandonment, quote, Eli Eli, lama sabachthani, biblical Aramaic for my God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? (00:48:58)

End quote. The divine had abandoned him. At the precipice of the final sanity-shattering ordeal, he'd been left terrifyingly alone. On December 6th, 1909, Alistair Crowley and Victor Newberg would attempt to scribe the 10th Aether, Zax, the crossing of the abyss. As written in his autobiographical confessions, Crowley explained, quote, The abyss is empty of being. It is filled with all possible forms. These forms swirl senselessly into haphazard heaps like dust devils, and each such chance aggregation asserts itself to be an individual. (00:49:49)

But the slightest disturbance dissipates the delusion, just like a dust devil brings it in showers of sand to the earth. We therefore went far out from the city into a hollow among the dunes, end quote. Upon reaching this hollow, they used chalk to draw into the sand a magical circle designed to protect Newberg as a scribe. Newberg sat down inside this consecrated circle, fortified by the holy names of God, his hands gripping a magical dagger. Next, Crowley drew a magical triangle several feet away, which was to be used to manifest the abyss and contain the demon Carranza. The cello then swore an oath to his master, quote, I, Victor Newberg, hereby solemnly promise upon my magical honor and swear that I will defend this magic circle to threaten with the dagger and command back into the triangle the spirit, if he should strive to escape from it and to strike with a dagger at anything that may seek to enter this circle. (00:50:50)

I will be exceedingly wary, armed against force and cunning, and I will preserve with my life the invulnerability of this circle, end quote. To this, Crowley gave him one final warning, not to speak to Carranza, no matter what the entity says. To do so would distract Newberg from defending the circle and give Carranza power. The encounter with Carranza remains one of the most controversial and physically intense episodes in the history of western occultism. On the surface, having traced both a magic circle and magic triangle, the ritual structure was that of a classic evocation, the calling forth of a spirit to a physical location outside the magician. (00:51:32)

All was relatively normal and as is tradition thus far. After Crowley finished tracing the circle, he performed the bornless invocation, then changed into a black robe and sacrificed three pigeons atop the triangle. For historical context, the ritual sacrifice of animals was traditional and ceremonial magic aimed at evoking spirits and giving them material for semi-physical manifestation, as seen in grimoires such as the Key of Solomon. This was the only aether working in which Crowley performed an animal sacrifice. (00:52:09)

Finally, he cried out to the tenth aether, Zax. It was from here that tradition would be flipped on its head. It's unknown what inspired Crowley to do this, whether it was a mistake, an in-the-moment compulsion, a premeditated decision, or a supernatural command. Alistair Crowley broke traditional protocol and performed an act of the most supreme magical risk. He stepped inside the very triangle where Curonzin was being summoned. This meant that his body became a physical vessel for the demon to manifest in. (00:52:38)

Essentially, Alistair Crowley got possessed. If this was his intention, he didn't inform his cella, Victor Newberg, about it. Though, not giving Newberg the plans in advance was typical for Crowley. Regardless, Newberg was no longer in the safety of his master. He was on his own, three feet away from Curonzin, the demon of the abyss, who'd manifested in Crowley's body, speaking in Crowley's tongue. In an instant, Newberg's magical circle of protection became his prison, and his test of discipleship became absolute. (00:53:15)

The success or failure of the operation was now entirely in Newberg's hands, even if it meant that he had to physically strike down his own master. What followed, recorded verbatim by the scribe Victor Newberg, was a bizarre, insane babble of dialogue. Curonzin's words revealed a being of absolute chaotic madness. Quote, I am the master of form, and from me all forms proceed. I am I. I will reach up to the knees of the Most High, and tear his phallus with my teeth, and bray his testicles in a mortar. (00:53:53)

I feed upon the names of the Most High. I churn them in my jaws, and I void them from my fundament. End quote. Throughout this so-called conversation, Curonzin began to rapidly shapeshift into different forms and voices to provoke Newberg to react or talk back. The entity changed its form to that of a beautiful woman he'd once fallen in love with in Paris. In a soft voice, it tried to woo him, throwing seductive glances and gestures. Newberg immediately recognized this trickery and refused to answer or move from his position in the circle. (00:54:30)

This prompted Curonzin to laugh wildly and loud, then immediately switch to a quiet, pitiful voice. Quote, O invulnerable one, that canst not not be tempted. I bow myself humbly. Thy name is mercy, and I cry aloud for pardon. Let me come and put my head beneath thy feet, that I may serve thee. Is not thy mercy infinite? My torment is eternal. The sun burns me. Give unto me, I pray thee, one drop of water, that I may quench my thirst. Sprinkle water upon my head, I can hardly go on. End quote. (00:55:07)

Newberg wasn't a fool, and while he wrote it all down, he didn't give in to any of these psychological ploys. He understood what he was dealing with. Curonzin continued morphing between forms, cycling between beautiful woman, holy man, a serpent, and his master Crowley, babbling coherently and then madly, rapidly shifting voices and switching emotions, and trying every strategy in the known universe. Anything to get Newberg to leave or unintentionally break his consecrated circle, anything to get him thinking, arguing, distracted. (00:55:41)

Curonzin begged the words out of Newberg, quote, To keep silence he should never learn. O thou that art so ready to speak, so slow to watch, thou art delivered over unto my power for this. And now one word was necessary unto me, and I could not speak it. I must speak, speak, speak, millions of mad voices in my brain. End quote. However, things changed when Curonzin realized the fact that the scribe was scribing everything furiously and endlessly as long as the entity kept talking. (00:56:16)

This was where, as Crowley recounted, quote, Curonzin made a long speech at a great pace to keep Newberg so busy writing it down that he would not notice that sand was being thrown from the triangle so as to obliterate the circle. The torrent of obscene blasphemy was beyond Newberg's power to keep up, concentration being impossible. It became an incoherent series of cries. Then suddenly, there was now a gap in the circle. And Curonzin, in the form of a naked savage, dashed through and flung Newberg to the earth and tried to tear out his throat with froth-covered fangs. End quote. (00:56:54)

Lying on the ground with the entity lurched over him, Newberg immediately invoked the names of God and slashed at Curonzin with his magic dagger. As he stabbed into the demon, shouting banishing prayers and calling upon the Tetragrammaton, Curonzin wrestled with him and gnashed his teeth, trying to bite through the bones at the back of his neck. Newberg pushpacked with all his strength and fury. Finally, his hand came across a magic staff that was just in reach, and with it, he threatened the entity. (00:57:30)

Curonzin retreated back into the triangle and Newberg immediately repaired his magic circle, panting for breath. Then, for a short while, the demon resumed cycling forms and attempts to seduce, fool, and intimidate Newberg, until the energy of the abyss was exhausted and the presence of Curonzin dematerialized. As it left, his voice gave one final spew. In this aether is all hodgepodge, and so long as it be hodgepodge, it mattereth little what may be written by the sea-green incorruptible scribe. (00:58:05)

The whore of it will be given in another place and time. The present seer, Alistair Crowley, who is not Crowley, seeth not the whore, because he is shut up and hath no name." End quote. A parched, aching, black-robed Alistair Crowley was all that remained in the triangle. His face drained of all color, as was Newberg's. It was done. As Crowley explained in his writings, quote, during all this time, I had astrally identified myself with Curonzin, so that I experienced each anguish, each rage, each despair, each insane outburst. (00:58:48)

Once my ordeal ended, I wrote the holy name of Babylon in the sand with my magical ring and rose from my trance. We lit a great fire to purify the place and destroyed the circle and triangle. The work had lasted over two hours, and we were both utterly exhausted. End quote. So what really happened here? For those who don't believe in magic or the supernatural, the common sense explanation is that Crowley had said all those things, and after taking off his robe, he was Curonzin's so-called naked savage form, who attacked Newberg. It's one thing to consider Crowley's narrative of the Curonzin event as fictional. (00:59:26)

However, according to Victor Newberg's biographer, quote, for Victor, what had happened was proof that Crowley's magic were, not in the sense intended, but all too really. To the end, he remained convinced that he had wrestled with a demon that day in the desert. End quote. Much like the Pan Ritual, Newberg was convinced of the supernatural nature of Curonzin. He was also the only true witness to Curonzin, and the authenticity of the experience left him horrified. (00:59:58)

It's no great secret that the encounter with the demon of the abyss left both Aleister Crowley and Victor Newberg forever changed. Both men suffered immense psychologic, physiologic, and psychic blowback. But to what extent and to what end? These are hotly debated questions. As the seer and the scribe stood silent and disheveled in the African sand, eyes fixed upon the great purifying bonfire they'd constructed, the cost of their ordeal began sinking in. Each of them carried wounds that would scar in time. Their record of the event makes no effort to hide the fact that the encounter with Curonzin left its mark. (01:00:43)

In The Vision and The Voice, the chapter on the 10th Aether presents a clear warning. Quote, This Aether being accursed and the seer forewarned, he taketh these precautions for the scribe. End quote. Similarly, we find the words of Newberg scrawled into the footnotes. Quote, The greatest precautions were taken at the time and have since been yet further fortified to keep silence concerning the rite of evocation. The major adept is warned most seriously against attempting to emulate this operation, which is in any case improper for him to perform. (01:01:17)

To call forth Curonzin, unless one be wholly above the abyss, is to ensure the most appalling and immediate catastrophe. End quote. Of course, by the time these warnings were penned, the ritual had been completed. But one critical question remains that has haunted occult historians for well over a century. Did Crowley successfully cross the abyss and annihilate his ego, as many attest? Or did the encounter with Curonzin annihilate him, leaving a demon wearing his face to walk the earth at will, as others maintain? (01:01:59)

Dr. Alex Owen, a professor of 20th century British history at Northwestern University, acknowledges the realities of the battle with Curonzin from a psychoanalytical perspective, but argues that Crowley failed. Quote, Crowley's subsequent behavior suggests, indeed, that he had not made a successful crossing of the abyss. That he was caught in the grip of unconscious forces that he was unable to filter, monitor, or control. Far from establishing an all-seeing harmonious relationship with the unconscious, working with it to achieve magical ends, the unconscious now controlled and dominated him. End quote. (01:02:39)

However, this is not how Crowley's followers understand it at all. The modern thelemic teacher, Marco Visconti, addresses this paradox. Quote, Crowley's life, marked by undeniable egotism despite claims of having crossed the abyss, casts a shadow of doubt on the authenticity of such a spiritual attainment. His continued egotism, often critiqued, could be viewed through a different lens, a deliberate aspect of his persona that facilitated his mission to guide and challenge his followers, a deliberate strategy to engage with the world in a way that would most effectively transmit the teachings. (01:03:20)

His persona, with all its complexities and contradictions, served as a living testament to the path he preached, embodying the trials and triumphs of the spiritual journey. End quote. While this has been a very fierce and divisive debate among occult circles in the academic world for nearly a century, for the purpose of our investigation, we'll continue on as Crowley did, assuming that he crossed the abyss successfully, at least by his own definition. But for the two men who limped back to Boussédat on December 6th, it was not a matter of semantics, psychophilosophy, or theology. It was the brutal reality of what they'd just endured. (01:04:03)

In his own words, Crowley confessed, quote, I hardly ever know how we got back to Boussédat. End quote. Drained and at their breaking points, but with their mission yet incomplete, like soldiers, they somehow rallied themselves to press on. The question lingered in the air. What vision awaits a man standing on the other side of the abyss? Alistair Crowley and Victor Newberg awoke the next day, and despite their physical, mental, and psychic exhaustion, decided to set their feet atop the next rung of the etheric ladder. There was scarcely time to rest. (01:04:49)

In the afternoon of December 7th, Crowley invoked the ninth aether, Zip. So what happens after you've stared into the face of pure chaos? Well, you receive your reward. This vision would become known as the reward of the magister templi. Crowley found himself walking on a razor's edge of light across the abyss, and having crossed the abyss, he was shown a universe transformed. Quote, each curse concealed a blessing. I understood that my ignorance and lack of intelligence had made me imagine the existence of evil. (01:05:24)

So long as I am I, all else must seem hostile. Now that there was no longer any I to suffer, all these ideas which had inflicted suffering became innocent. End quote. However, Newberg, who paid most of the cost and carried the bulk of the practical consequences, didn't share in Crowley's reward. He was starting to crack. There was a storm building inside of him that his master failed to recognize. (01:05:59)

Quote, now we have passed the dark fate's outer portal and sit enthroned within the temple. Here in the dust I lie, a broken shadow. End quote. Over the next nine days, Crowley and Newberg marched another hundred plus unforgiving desert miles, and the daily etheric visions continued, taking on an uncomfortable intensity and sharp duality. In the words of the historian Alex Owen, some were lyrical hymns of beauty and ecstasy. However, other visions were full of fear and foreboding. In the Six Aether, Moz, he was given a vision of the grade of mages. (01:06:34)

However, the vision was guarded by what he called the Ape of Thoth, the manifested inverse of the God of Knowledge. After changing his posture to one of passive waiting, Crowley was granted only a partial vision. He perceived the central temple of the Aether, which was an urn containing the ashes of the Book of Tarot. However, this was the limit of his access. A voice from the urn declared, quote, get thee back from the urn, thy ashes are not hidden here. End quote. (01:07:08)

After this, the God Thoth appeared and drove Crowley back, causing him to fall through the night sky and crash into a little village in the desert. Overall, these final Aethers were pushing Crowley to the absolute edge. He knew that he was close to the absolute limit of his powers. Quote, as I advanced, it became more and more difficult to obtain the vision. I am trying all sorts of magical methods of piercing the veil, and the more I strive, the farther away I seem to get from success. End quote. (01:07:44)

Things weren't just difficult for Crowley, though. Victor Newberg was beginning to express clear effects of the trauma he'd experienced throughout the journey. As recorded in Crowley's own Algerian journal, quote, December 10th, we spent the day at Ben Siror and did the sixth Aether. The scribe Newberg defiled himself with impurity and spake great ranting words of blasphemy. December 11th, on the night of December 11th, the scribe was stricken down by a foul and malignant disease. But on the intercession of the seer, he was miraculously restored in the morning. (01:08:25)

December 13th, starting at 5am, we had five hour walk to the palms of Tolga, and then to our infinite disgust, two hours more to the town. My comrade had another jag of mental lethargy, which turned as usual with him to a chrysalis of selfishness and surliness, bursting at last to an horrible dragon of hatred, manifesting in an epileptic spasm of demoniac and murderous intensity. He was controlled with difficulty by the free use of the names of God and by kneeling on his head, sufficiently himself again at night to write down the end of the fifth aether. End quote. (01:09:09)

Crowley's scathingly cold private entries frame Newberg as unstable, lazy, bad-tempered, and hostile. However, much of this reads today like the symptoms of post-traumatic stress. It's uncomfortably telling how Crowley considered this behavior typical or usual for Newberg, and that his solution was more force, likely compounding the damage. Despite Newberg's obvious worsening condition, Crowley still shunned away a single day of rest. The poet's only vent was his poetry. Quote, he laughs loud upon my planing, seeing in me his prey. He girds austerely at my dreadful straining to hold myself in play. (01:09:52)

He hath no pity now. His great hand on my brow brings visions never to be known to me, till I be one with his mad mystery. End quote. Meanwhile, as they journeyed to the oasis of Biskra, the next several aethers pushed the beast to his own teetering edge. Upon the second aether, Arn, Crowley began to seriously putter out. He couldn't handle the intensity. It was so difficult that he even tried scrying it while bathing in a hot spring to prevent himself from falling limp and unconscious on the ground. (01:10:34)

Quote, In the second aether, begun on the morning of December 18th, the work had to be broken off and the invocation repeated. Yet again I found the strain unsupportable, had to break off and go to the hot baths of Hammam Salahuddin, and I continued, immersed to the neck in the hot sulfur spring. The water somehow soothed my nerves, enabling me to experience the aether without physical collapse. Even so, I could not get to the end and only did so after more than two days concentrated consecration of myself. End quote. (01:11:08)

In a rather striking break of protocol, between these two days, Crowley decided to temporarily skip the second aether and instead move on to the first. As we know, by not going through the aethers in order, the magician risks collapsing the etheric ladder and being inflicted with magical madness. However, Crowley believed that forcing his way into the second aether in his exhausted state would result in his complete physical destruction. Refusing to abandon their quest so close to his end, he weighed the risks and he decided that breaking protocol was the less potentially catastrophic option. (01:11:47)

On December 19th, the day after their visit to the hot springs, Crowley invoked the first aether, Lil. Lil is of tremendous significance in the Enochian system, being the final and innermost aether, the blazing core of the cosmic map, the ultimate goal and final manifestation of the entire etheric journey. To behold this vision is to attain the highest mystical state within the Enochian system and to successfully complete the great work. And for Crowley and Newberg, to invoke Lil was to crown their grueling month-long magical journey and finally be done with it, minus that pesky second aether to be returned to soon. (01:12:33)

In Crowley's vision of the first aether, this is what he witnessed. by countless myriads of archangels all the same colorless brilliance and every one of them is blind and on his forehead and on his heart and on his hand is the secret sigil of the beast the child sings i am the child of all who am the father of all for from me come forth all things that i might I am light and I am night. I am life and I am death. (01:13:35)

I am war and I am peace, and I am that which is beyond them. Ye shall feast upon the honey of the gods, and be drunk upon the dew of immortality. For I am Horus, the crowned and conquering child, whom thou knewest not. The vision of the first Aether, Lil, was the culmination of their entire harrowing month in Algeria. But having reached the center of the Enochian heavens, a psychic debt remained. There was still one rung on the ladder, one last Aether that they'd been forced to put on pause. (01:14:10)

On December 20th, the following day, Crowley and Newberg would make their final attempt at the psychically volatile second Aether, known as Arn. This took place in Biskra, invoking Arn in the evening beneath the light of a crescent moon. What he saw there was not a vision of cosmic law or prophetic grandeur, but one of profound, terrifying intimacy. His vision of the second Aether would become known as the Marriage of the Seer with Babylon. The vision began with the figure of Babylon herself, the great scarlet woman, riding upon the bull of the apocalypse. (01:14:48)

But the vision was an unstable whirlwind of ancient biblical legends. He saw Eve in the serpent, and a retelling of the story of Cain, who bore the mark of the beast upon his brow. This imagery was a direct challenge to the dogma Crowley had been raised with as a former Christian. Then the vision clarified into a single overwhelming presence of a woman dancing, seductive and deadly. It was Babylon. In an unknown tongue, she sang, I am the harlot that shaketh death. This shaking giveth the peace of satiate lust. (01:15:26)

Crowley, floating in the dark water, was utterly overcome. The vision was too much. His senses failed, his body threatening to give out completely. In a final desperate act, he strained his entire being toward her, crying out in a furious, ecstatic agony. This is a mystery ineffable, and it is mine, and I can never reveal it, either to God or to man. It is for thee and me. My spirit is no more. My soul is no more. My life leaps out into annihilation. End quote. As he shouted these final words, his body convulsed. (01:16:11)

Newberg grabbed onto his master and held him down so that he wouldn't be injured. Crowley awoke, limp and wheezing. The Thirty Aethers had been explored. Their brutal 28-day magical operation, a journey to the very edge of reality and sanity, was finally over. Crowley and Newberg spent several days recuperating in Biskra, after which the two staggered their way back to Algiers. On December 31st, 1909, they boarded a ship and sailed back home to Southampton, England. It was a quiet New Year's Eve, but echoes of the journey screamed in their ears. (01:16:52)

In his poetry, Newberg expressed feelings of profound sacrifice. End quote. The warlock weighed his vision with his voice. Triumph would trade. End quote. They'd map the heavens, but the cost of that knowledge would follow them for the rest of their days, and it wouldn't be shared equally. Those who knew Victor Newberg said he carried the desert on his face and bore the marks of this magical adventure to the grave. (01:17:25)

Sadly, there's no question that the psychological toll for Newberg was severe and permanent. The price of discipleship was catastrophic. He was a seeker who found his master, an initiate who passed his trials, and a warrior who courageously faced down Coronzen at the abyss. But the cost was a life spent haunted by the trauma. The image of the goat god Pan, in particular, loomed over Newberg. For a short while, it inspired some of his greatest poetry, but eventually it would fill him with nothing but dread. He stated that the goat was my curse. (01:17:59)

Over the next several years, the poet came to deeply hate Alistair Crowley, and in the autumn of 1914, he finally broke off their relationship, renouncing all of his vows. In a final act of cruelty, Crowley ritually cursed him in a formula said to be linked with Pan, and Newberg suffered a nervous breakdown. Thereafter, he lived in fear of Crowley's vengeance in return, a tragic and sobering end for a gifted searching poet, whose courage under impossible pressure saved the operation and arguably the life of his master. Alistair Crowley, too, was forever changed. (01:18:39)

His friends and followers attested that he came back from Algeria a different man, if the man who returned was Crowley at all. There are those such as the historian Alex Owen, who believed that he was, quote, shattered psychologically and never recovered from the ordeal, end quote. There are many, though, who don't hold this opinion, in particular, Crowley's followers. This journey was fundamental in shaping the remainder of Alistair Crowley's life and the cornerstones of his theology and magical system. (01:19:17)

Everything that he went on to develop and establish, from sex magic and the breaking of taboos, to the doctrines of Babylon and the Abyss, to the pillars of his occult order, the AA, and his new occult religion of Thelema, including its key scripture, The Vision and The Voice, all of this and more grew from these four desert weeks. That said, Crowley never again mounted a magical operation of this scale without a far larger entourage and systematic safeguards. (01:19:49)

Clearly, he understood that the risks they took in Algeria were too dangerous to be repeated, and certain lines should never again be crossed, and warned his followers away from emulating what he and Newberg did. But, at the same time, Crowley framed the Algerian operation as a resounding, absolute success. Now, after laying out all the history, the rituals, and the conflicting expert opinions, I feel like I should step in with my own perspective. This story, more than any other I've investigated, was particularly troubling for me. (01:20:22)

I had difficulty reconciling with Aleister Crowley's profound failure to recognize the shattering of a man he'd spent an entire month journeying with, through pain, exhaustion, and revelation. Most people who go through something that intense together form a bond. But, in his journals, Crowley documented Newberg's traumatic episodes as well as his abuse, without a hint of empathy or compassion. However, Crowley wasn't ignorant of his suffering. He was the active architect of it. When reconsidering Newberg's involvement in the operation, there are many instances of profound violation of the student-teacher relationship. (01:21:05)

It seems apparent that Crowley viewed Victor Newberg not as a student to be developed for his own benefit, but rather as a tool. Crowley used Newberg as a spiritual vehicle and spending account. It's tempting to pin his calculated use of others directly on Thelema's ultimate injunction, do what thou wilt. And Crowley's true will was to complete this magical operation. However, this would overlook a crucial distinction. Crowley, as the founder of Thelema and its chief interpreter, explicitly paired do what thou wilt with love is the law, love under will, and every man and every woman is a star. (01:21:44)

These lines assert that every person is sovereign, each has their own true will, and that the proper relation between stars is love, not domination. Ideally, each star moves in its own course without collision. In fact, Crowley's own writings on Thelemic doctrine warn against trying to dominate or deform another person, and specifically state that interference with the will of another is the great sin. By this measure, no matter what Crowley believed his true will demanded, he crossed the line. Newberg's will, limits, and suffering were not his to spend. (01:22:23)

So, what happened in Algeria was less of Thelema in practice. To me, it's probably the starkest example of Aleister Crowley's own solipsistic behavior. The circle in the sand was meant to protect a man from a demon, but it couldn't protect a disciple from his master. Ultimately, we're left with the central, most disturbing paradox of the entire operation. Whether profound moral failure can coexist with a genuine spiritual breakthrough? In my opinion, any operation should be judged by its roots as much as its fruits. (01:22:59)

I don't believe efficacy absolves ethics, and I won't ignore the human cost borne by Victor Newberg. But there are still plenty of mysteries on the table, so from here, I'll pass it on to you. Were the aethers a genuine map of the heavens, or a terrifying projection of one man's psyche? Did Aleister Crowley actually annihilate his ego as he claimed, and why did he step into the triangle? Who or what did Victor really fight in the desert? Finally, where does magic end, and madness begin? (01:23:32)
